TOILETING ASSISTANCE

Some people may require toileting assistance as they age. Those who have balance or strength issues due to operation, illnesses, or just age often have a difficult time using the toilet. Standing up and sitting down, or even standing in front of the toilet may be difficult.

Some people may also have difficulty with wiping or cleaning themselves after using the toilet. Arthritis, injuries, lack of flexibility, or other factors my make reaching or applying requisite pressure impractical.

Methods of Providing Toileting Assistance.

Home care aides can provide assistance to seniors by helping them maintain balance in the bathroom. They may help lift the person onto and off of the toilet seat. Grab bars mounted to walls, the toilet seat, and from floor-to-ceiling are useful for this purpose. Transfer benches can help move the senior from a wheelchair or other mobility aid, to the toilet.

Extended reach wiping devices may be used to help clean the person. A rubber or silicon band placed on the hand may help the senior to clean themselves with the wiping device. A bidet or toilet seat bidet, or other water squirting device, can also help in clean up.

Helping the person to clean up and wash hands after use of the toilet is another form of toileting assistance home care aides provide. They can help the person maintain balance by the sink, or can use sanitizing wipes or a wash cloth to clean the senior’s hands and other areas, as necessary.
