MENTAL HEALTH REHABILITATION

Mental health rehabilitation is a form of treatment designed to help people suffering some form of mental disorder or substance abuse problem to recover the ability to cope with the demands of everyday life and to restore relationships that may have become strained or damaged because of the issue.

Mental health rehabilitation may be part of a larger rehabilitation effort aimed at helping an individual overcome a substance addiction. In these cases, addiction has seriously impacted the person’s ability and the desire to engage in normal social interaction, pay attention to hygiene, and generally cope with simple daily tasks. The abuse may cause the individual to lose the skills necessary to function in society.

The rehabilitation treatment addresses the emotional and mental components of the addiction. The person is retrained to function within the surrounding community, and is helped to recapture lost skills and abilities.

In-home mental health rehab efforts may involve working one-on-one with the patient to regulate the use of any medication necessary to maintain a balanced emotional state. It may also entail regular therapy sessions that support the patient in reentering society.

Mental health rehabilitation is a longer-term process; it may take months or even years to complete. Over the course of the treatment, the person will likely enjoy periods when progress comes easy, and other periods of seeming stagnation.

As the rehabilitation continues, support of loved ones is important. Each step forward should be acknowledged, no matter how minor it may seem. The combination of the proper treatment and support makes it possible for the patient to reenter society and once again enjoy life.
