OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY

The primary difference between occupational therapy and physical therapy is that occupational therapists (OTs) focus on improving a client’s ability to perform activities of daily living (ADL), while physical therapists (PTs) focus on improving a client’s ability to perform movement of the human body. An OT helps the person do daily tasks; the PT works to overcome biomechanical impairment.

OT help people to fully engage in daily life, whether the people are recovering from injuries, or have developmental or cognitive disabilities affecting their motor skills, emotions or behavior.

For instance, if you broke your hand, the PT would work with you to regain movement and strength in the hand. The OT with work with you to develop ways that you can accomplish the things you need to do with the hand, like eating, brushing your teeth, getting dressed, and wiping your bottom after using the toilet.
