ASSISTING WITH FUNCTIONAL MOBILITY

Assisting the Person While In Bed, and Getting In and Out of Bed.

  1. Home care aides provide assistance moving patients around while in bed to help prevent and alleviate bed sores and other ailments.
    • Make use of turning-pads, turning-wedges, and other devices
    1. They help seniors get out of bed using:
      • Transfer blankets,
      • Grab bars,
      • Lifting slings,
      • Hydraulic and battery powered lift equipment, and
      • Gait belts.

    1. With the aid devices the home care aid:
      • Helps the senior to sit and stand up,
      • Transfers them to a mobile chair or scooter, or
      • Gets them situated with a walker or cane.

    Assisting the Person In the Bathroom

    1. The home care aide can then help the senior to move to the bathroom:
      • For a shower or bath,
      • For toileting, and/or
      • For grooming tasks such as brushing teeth, shaving, make-up, and hair combing or brushing.

    1. Within the bathroom, the home care aide and the person can make use of :
      • Grab bars,
      • Transfer benches and stools, and
      • Hand-held showers.

    Assisting the Person In the Other Rooms and Throughout Home

    Once the person is up and about in the home, often they will be sitting and need to get up and move to another room. The home care aide can also assist the senior to get in and out of chairs and to move throughout the house

    1. The primary devices the home care aide will use for moving the senior in and out of chairs include:
      • Seat lifts,
      • Lifting slings,
      • Hydraulic and battery powered lift equipment,
      • Gait belts, and.
      • Grab bars.
