Some home care aides can provide assistance in collecting and tracking bills, and making sure that the bills are paid on time. They can record receipt of the bills, verify that each is accurate, schedule payments, and write out checks for signature.
Many people pay at least some of their bills electronically. Seniors need to be cautious in what tasks, responsibilities, and signing authority is given to caregivers. Seniors likewise need to take care to protect passwords and access to banking and other financial asset accounts.
Like everyone else, seniors should exercise caution when choosing and retaining those who will help them with bill paying and financial matters. As much as we would like all people to be honest, some are not. Any persons to whom access to financial accounts is granted should be vetted and bonded. Obtain a resume and references, and call the references. The senior and another responsible party should regularly review transaction activity.
