The routine task of getting to and from the bathroom can be challenging for some with with mobility-limiting conditions. Likewise, once in the bathroom, some people have difficulty getting into and out of tubs and showers. Slippery floors, tub walls, and shower lips can contribute to risk of falls.
Sitting down on and standing up from toilets may also be a challenge. Weakness in legs and troubles with balance contribute to the problem.
There are a variety of bath and shower mobility aids that home care aides use to help persons with mobility challenges. Bedpans, portable urinals, and commodes, allow the person relief without having to traverse to the bathroom
Mobile commode/shower chairs not only allow for transport of the person to the bathroom, but also allow the person to empty their bowels and bladder without getting on and off the toilet. These chairs can be wheeled into a shower, and allow the person to be washed while still on the chair.
Raised toilets or toilet seats make it easier for people to sit and stand. Toilet grab bars also help.
Other grab bars allow persons easier movement around the bathroom, and including entering and exiting tubs and showers. Transfer benches can be employed to move people in and out of tubs and showers, and between tub and toilet. A shower bench or stool can allow a person to sit while showering or bathing.
